eBike Maintenance Tips

Maintaining your electric bike doesn’t need to be a dreaded task. Here at Reid we want everyone to experience their freedom in the best possible way and that’s why this week we’ve come up with a few useful tips to help you maintain your eBike.  Maintaining an electric bike isn’t too dissimilar to a regular bike, however with a battery it is important to regularly take care of it.

From how to clean your eBike to battery maintenance, we have you covered with all your electric bike maintenance queries…

How To Clean Your eBike

Cleaning an electric bike is very similar to cleaning a mechanical bike. You can still use water despite it being electric, although we advise (like with any bikes) to not use a pressured hose as this can enter sensitive areas which could damage your electric bike.

The first step to cleaning your eBike is to remove the battery. Then, just like cleaning a mechanical bike, wash your bike down with something like a garden hose to rinse away any dirt. Take care in avoiding electrical areas.

Once this is done, use a sponge or a soft cleaning brush to scrub away any dirt that has remained on your bike. Make sure your electric bike is completely dry before reconnecting the battery.

How To Maintain Your eBike’s Battery

It is important to keep your eBike’s battery in excellent condition as this is the heart of your electric bike. Getting into good charging habits can ensure that your battery remains in great condition.

Like with our eScooter’s, we recommend fully charging your eBike’s battery after every ride, even after short distances. One cycle is counted as charging the battery from 0 – 100%, therefore if you use 25% of your eBike’s battery and then charge to 100%, you can do this three more times before reaching one full cycle. We also recommend avoiding fully depleting your battery, so try and top up the battery as often as possible!

When taking your battery out of your bike, it is also important to ensure that it is fully locked into place and it can’t full out whilst riding.

General Bike Maintenance

Just like a regular bike, it is still important that you do general inspections of your eBike to make sure all of the components, not just the battery, are in great condition.  Especially with an electric bike, as they tend to cover longer distances than regular bikes.

It is a good idea to regularly check your tyre pressure, as under-inflated wheels can lead to poor performance as they increase the amount of drag created when riding. This will ultimately lead to your battery running out more quickly.

We also recommend keeping an eye on the basic components to make sure they are also well maintained. For example, check the handlebars, the wheels, gear changes, lights and brake cables to make sure everything is working correctly and firmly attached to your eBike.

How Should I Store My eBike?

If you’re looking at storing your electric bike away for a while, it is important that you follow the correct steps to ensure it remains in good condition, for when you return to it.

Remove the battery from your eBike, we recommend to store your battery at around 40%-70% charge if you’re storing it for a while. It is also important to store the battery at room temperature and in a place free from moisture and direct sunlight, as this can damage your bike’s battery. Anything below 7°C and above 29°C is considered extreme, so try and store your battery somewhere between these temperatures.

When you return to using your eBike, it’s a good idea to give it a wipe down to remove any dust or dirt that it may have collected whilst being stored. Also, as it hasn’t been used in a while, make sure to check the battery level and top up as necessary before returning it to the path!

Finally…

Having an eBike is a great way to commute to work as well as exploring the trails at the weekend. Maintaining your electric bike is important to ensure it continues to perform to the best it can be and by following these tips, you’ll be sure to keep your bike happy!
