REID RIDER OF THE MONTH APRIL

Angela Hutchison (@thebrunettetravels) is our Reid Rider of the Month for April

Angela from New Zealand, has become our Reid Rider of the Month for April on our Harrier. She caught our eye on Instagram with #reidbikes! We caught up with Angela, to find out a little bit more about her and her bike…

Introduce yourself…

Hey I’m Angela! I’m a Kiwi girl – born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand but have been living in Brisbane, Australia for the last 10 years. I’m a wanderluster at heart and travel blogged for many years as I backpacked my way around the world. Now in my 30s, I’m taking the time to build a career. And what better industry than Tourism? Now, I’m sure I could have happily lived forever as a nomad, but it’s not just me anymore. Last year, I got married to my husband Tim, so now we are putting down roots here in Australia. Look at me being an adult! I do still update my adventures on instagram regularly though, just now with my own personal photographer, yes my insta-husband! #husbandsofinstagram

When and how did you get into bike riding?

I’ve been riding from a young age. My family would pack up the car and go camping every year with the bikes in tow. I remember my first bike so clearly, but maybe not for the right reason. I was still learning to ride so I had my training wheels on and was riding around the backyard barefoot… Can you see where this is going? My foot slipped and my big toe got jammed in the middle of the pedal. Screaming like a banshee, and my mum in a panic. Luckily, my dad was around to unscrew the pedal. Otherwise, it would have been a very embarrassing trip to the emergency room… with a bike on my foot!
But as you can tell, this didn’t put me off bike riding!
In fact, I travelled to South America in 2014 and completed Death Road in Bolivia. It was a 64km downhill gravel road on a mountain bike. And yes, it is called Death Road for the reason you are probably thinking. It is the deadliest road in the world and not hard to see why. The road is only 3 metres wide and you ride left side, which just happens to be cliff side, with cars, vans and trucks overtaking you. Seriously, nothing like a 600 metre plummet to your death to get the adrenaline going!
Since then, the bike rides have become more low key. Coastal riding being my favourite! We are quite spoilt here in Queensland where there are so many beautiful routes that hug the coastline and the beaches are stunning!

So, what made you choose Reid and why the Harrier?

Actually, it all started with Pinterest! My husband owns beach cruisers which I find heavy and… err… let’s just say not my style (sorry husby!) I wanted something light and smooth, and something that looked funky! As I do with most things in life, I got on Pinterest and started searching. I was looking at all different bikes when I came across a white fixie. As I looked into them a bit more, I knew that was the bike I wanted.
I started to research more and found the Harrier in white, sleek, bit hipster, light, more me! Perfect! My husband ended up surprising me with for Christmas – the best Christmas ever! We swapped out the white handle grips and seat for the tan and named her Migaloo after the notorious white whale that visits Queensland in the annual whale migration!

Is this your first FIXIE?

It is! And I honestly wouldn’t ride anything else now. Well, maybe something a bit different down Death Road! We have since welcomed one more to the family. I think the husband had FOMO (fear of missing out).

So, how has Migaloo treated you?

Migs is great – I actually can’t fault her at all!
I think one of my favourite memories with her, and where I saw her true potential, was a trip we did to Byron Bay just after I got her. We had been riding all day and later decided to cycle to the Lighthouse. I was pretty tired and dreading the hill that was coming up, so I decided to get a slight run up to tackle this hill. I was so worried I would have to walk my bike to the top once I ran out of steam. However, I coasted effortlessly up the hill. When I reached the top, I turned around to see… well no one. I’d left them in the dust! I would love to take credit for it, but it was all Migs! (Let me just tell you, the downhill was even better!)

What and where have you been with Migs?

Well like I said, we are pretty spoilt for choice when it comes to bike riding here in Queensland. I love biking along the coast. There is just something about being next to the ocean on a bike that is so calming! I feel like I can let go of everything and just enjoy that moment! Sunshine Coast is probably where we cycle most often, but the bike routes around Brisbane City and Gold Coast are equally as good. The thing I love about Brisbane City is the river and the way it snakes around Brisbane. You can drive to a ferry terminal with the bikes and park your car. Then, jump on the bikes and keep riding. End up on the other side of the river and jump on the ferry to get you across the river. Then, back to the car. Majority of the time the bike route follows the river so the scenery is great and it hardly feels like exercise at all!

Do you have any other future adventures planned?

As it gets a bit cooler in Queensland, we will do more riding. To be fair, peak summer can be a bit uncomfortable for riding.
My husband and I are looking at campers to fix up so we can travel around Australia. So of course, Migaloo will come along for more adventures! And if my husband and I decide to have kids, it’s something we will do with them! Watch this space!

Finally, what advice would you give to those who have never been on a biking adventure or even a bike?

Don’t be afraid to start! In fact, I encourage you to challenge yourself to give it a go. You have no idea what fun you are missing out on! The Harrier would actually be a great starting point because of the fixed speed, the weight of the frame and how easy it is to ride! We have had so many great memories of weekend adventures with friends. Give it a go!
