World Car Free Day – Consider Cycling?
As today is World Car Free Day we have put this article together to explain what it is all about, why it is so important and how you can get involved.
This day aims to raise awareness about the pollution cars/vans/motorbikes cause and encourage you to use a bike for your shorter journeys.
Why do we need to reduce our car use? Well car engines release poisonous gases that pollute the air, especially the extremely harmful greenhouse gas called carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide can cause people to get really sick or even die. In fact, 80% of lung diseases are a result of car pollution.
Here are some interesting facts worth remembering next time you’re hopping in your car!
– Two thirds of car journeys are less than 5 miles. That is a 15-minute cycle!
– About 11 million cars were designed to cheat pollution testing
– Over 75% of short-distance, inner-city travel is made by car
Maybe you’ve already driven to the office today, we’re not suggesting dumping your car and walking home but perhaps consider cycling tomorrow?
Cycling not only benefits the environment but can be a great way to start and end your day with getting some fresh air. You may even notice mental and physical health benefits too.
Plus, it’s always good to save on petrol, right?
