It’s always important to give your bike a check over before heading out on the road. A small amount of maintenance could make a huge difference to the quality and comfortability of your journey as well as keeping you and your bike safe.
How often you ride your bike will determine how frequently you need to carry out maintenance. We recommend making sure to do a check before the summer and winter as a minimum.
If you’re not comfortable servicing your bike yourself, your local bike shop will be able to carry it out for you.
Tighten nuts & bolts
As with many mechanical items, over time nuts & bolts can begin to loosen. It is completely normal and sometimes overlooked so just make sure to tighten these up until you feel resistance. You will need an allen key set or spanner to do this.
To keep your chain in good order, give it a little spruce up every now and then. Use some lube and an old rag to clean it of grease and dirt. Keeping it clean and in good working order will lengthen its life.
Tyres can deflate over time and slow punctures can go unnoticed. Make sure to give them a check over before heading out! I couldn’t write this one without a personal dig to my boyfriend for the 4 times I had to collect him with punctures last summer haha. Good tyres and pre-ride checks can help prevent these kinds of problems…
Give your bike a brake test and make sure your brakes are working as they should be. Nothing is worse than heading down a hill and releasing your brakes aren’t working properly…
Just check that your gears are working properly and engaging when you shift. If you have any problems or shifting has become more difficult it may be time to take your bike to a local shop for servicing.
