New Year’s resolution

A New Year – A New Decade, 2020 is now well and truly upon us. In the modern world of New Year’s Resolutions, fitness and health are often at the forefront. So, how can you integrate cycling into your life and achieve your resolutions this year? Today’s blog explores why you should start the new year off the right way by getting outdoors and onto the two wheels.

Do you spend most of your Monday to Friday behind the desk, feeling unmotivated to hit the gym after a long working day? Why not get your exercise fix by riding to and from work, instead of confining yourself inside the metal box that is a bus or car every morning? By cycling to work regularly, in no time you’ll find yourself healthier, fitter and happier. Yep, those endorphins really work wonders.

On the other hand, if you’re having concerns on what a commute to work by bike entails, like: What kind of bike is suitable for commuting to work? How to avoid fatigue when cycling to work every day? What types of clothes are appropriate for cyclists? We’ve got you covered on our blog ‘Top tips for commuting to work by bike’. Let’s make cycling to work a new and frequent exercise this year!

It’s no doubt that environmental pollution and global warming are serious issues. By cycling rather than driving, you can do your bit for nature. Recent staggering figures have shown how carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have increased considerably all over the world. Fortunately, increasing walking and cycling trips, along with decreasing automobile trip lengths by an average of 1 to 3 miles, can significantly affect the CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. Statistics show that in the USA, moderately increasing bike utilisation over a year could save 6 to 14 million tonnes of CO2 and 700 million to 1.6 billion gallons of fuel.

Furthermore, research indicates that a cycling commute of 10km each way would save 1,500kg of greenhouse gas emissions each year. Especially, cycling during peak hours would contribute to further emission reductions by reducing congestion and improving traffic flow.

We believe that every little bit counts. So, why not offset your carbon footprint with a little pedal power this year?

We’re doing our part, too. In 2020, we have decided to make a pledge in taking an active role in tackling climate change, by planting a tree for every bike we sell. This means that for every Reid bike purchased around the world, we will plant a tree. We have a responsibility as a good-manufacturing business to offset the carbon that we are using to make our already sustainable products, bikes. Then, what better way to do this than planting a tree. To learn more about our new ‘Buy one, Plant one’ Environmental Initiative, follow this link.

If you own a car, you certainly understand the struggle of parking your car in the city. A full-day parking in the city can easily cost what you’d pay for lunch and more on any given workday. We think that your money can be better spent for special occasions. In this case, you may consider wanting a means of transportation that is more friendly to your pocket. What can be more appropriate than a bike, really? FYI, switching from automobile to bicycle trips can have significant cost savings for communities and individuals:

  • 3-5¢ per mile in energy costs;
  • 1-12¢ per mile in air pollution costs;
  • 2-5¢ per mile in noise pollution.

In the long run, all those savings will make up to something significant. So, sit your butt on your bike saddle and pedal to your next destination. Also, remember that every turn is another coin in the pocket.

Before settling in for a day in front of a screen, treat your eyes to some time out by taking the scenic route to work. Ditch the highway and pedal through parks, down quiet country lanes or even beaches instead. Also, fill your lungs with fresh air to start a new day off right. By doing this, you’ll feel more alive and more awake when you get to work than ever before.

Significantly, it is believed that cycling in the nature can do a lot for your mental health. By connecting with the nature, you’ll have calmer thinking and reduced stress and anxiety, which leads to mood uplifts! Furthermore, cycling regularly outdoors has been found to be associated with increased energy and greater feelings of vitality, which can boost brainpower. What’s a better way than riding a bike to start a working day with a fresh, sharp mind?
