Hot Read Hot read Dec 18

Jon Street (@bournemouthcyclist) is our Reid Rider of the Month for December!

Jon from Bournemouth, England has become our Reid Rider of the Month for December on our Argon 29er after riding it in two duathlons! We caught up with Jon, to find out a little bit more about him and his bike…

Introduce yourself…

Hey! I’m Jon and I’m from Bournemouth on the South Coast of the UK. Husband to Charlie and father to Eva and Gabriel. Oh, and I reckon I’m a bit of a cyclist!

When and how did you get into bike riding?

Bike riding? Well, I reckon it must have started with my first bike at the age of 5, a junior SE racing BMX. Bikes were freedom for us as kids. Since living near the local nature reserve, we were out on them all the time. Soon, this progressed onto jumping off anything and shredding the local hills and BMX track on the hardcore hardtails of the time. Then, onto commuting to and from working in bike shops! Bikes have been with me forever! Now, they are an escape and release from the stress of work and a way of keeping up my fitness. Damn important when you get older!!

So, you’ve been riding the Argon when we approached you as a local cyclist to us on Instagram. What were your first impressions of the Argon?

Yes lucky boy eh! First impressions were great. Fast looking, well-specced, and after swinging a leg over found it really easy to handle.

Is this your first time trying a 29er?

Yes, first time to try one properly. Swung a leg over one in their early days but stayed with my 26” wheeled bike.

So, how has the Argon treated you?

Incredibly well. Its been super competent, with just the right mix of components to be a great allrounder. A bike you can just jump on and ride in all conditions.

So, we know you rode it for your first duathlon recently, well done! How did that go?

Yes thanks very much for that! It went really well. Was so pleased to cross that finish line. It was my first mixed discipline event, and I thought I would make it harder by doing it offroad! And from what I’ve heard the run/bike/run nature of duathlons is more punishing than a triathlon (next on the list!). The bike section was great on the Argon, it was solid and fast on the mix of healthy and gravel forest tracks, enabling me to catch and make multiple places. It outperformed multiple bikes twice its price and gained interest from a few of the other entrants. I enjoyed it so much I entered a second one! And goes what, the Argon gave just as good a result second time around.

Do you have any other future adventures planned?

Adventures for sure. Road wise I’d love to ride some of the big climbs like Ventoux, Galibier, Alpe d’Huez, and Passo Stelvio. Plus, I’d love to head back to ride Mallorca again. Offroad in the UK I would like to ride the South Downs Way In Spain, I would like to ride and bikepack the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain. Another adventure on the boil is acquiring a cargo bike to transport our two kids and a Bakfiets from Amsterdam and riding it back to the UK! Now, that would be an adventure! Anyone want to sponsor it??

Finally, what advice would you give to those who have never been on a biking adventure or even a bike?

Don’t put it off. Like most things in life, cycling is a lot less daunting than the thoughts that precede trying it for the first time or going on your first big trip. Cycling can be as relaxed or as extreme as you want it to be, so go nuts or take a break! That first pedal turn though is a bit of a gateway drug and you will soon want more! You really get to take a different perspective on things with a bike. Turn the legs and free the mind! You can see more than just going for a walk, save some money commuting, and get fit at the same time. What’s stopping you? There are so many people out there cycling that you will always find someone to help guide you. So, start looking online. If you can’t, just drop me a line on my blog (https://bournemouthcyclist.co.uk/) and I’ll help where I can!
